ART
Grades K-4: Monday - Friday
The Art curriculum encourages children to encounter
a variety of art principles, design elements, and art media while progressing
beyond what they are taught in school. Lessons include drawing, painting,
printing, ceramics, textiles/weaving, art history, composition and color.
Teachers plan projects that students can accomplish while learning new skills,
challenging their imagination while allowing for individual creativity. Many
projects continue beyond one week so that students learn to work through more
involved processes.
Guitar
Grades 1-4: Year 1: Monday
Grades 1-4: Year 2-3: Wednesday
Guitar class is designed to be enjoyable and
educational for all students even if they have not played a musical instrument
before. Students learn musical skills ranging from beginning note reading,
rhythmic concepts, sight reading, tone and dynamics, as well as ensemble
playing. Open enrollment for the Year 1 Class is available for beginners and students
that have not previously enrolled in Arts4Kids Guitar. Year 2-3 Class is open only to those students that have previously
participated in Arts4Kids Guitar.
MOVEMENT
Grades K-4: Thursday, Friday
Students get to explore a great range of movement
styles including African Dance, Renaissance Circle Dance and American Folk
Dance. The movement curriculum helps students to discover how to use their
bodies to tell a story, mimic animals and express emotions. Please note that
this class is not equivalent to any dance class offered through SCA.
Music
Grades K-2: Monday, Wednesday
The Music curriculum is structured to incorporate
elements of ear training, sight-reading, rhythm and
pitch matching while progressing beyond what is typically taught in school.
These principles are taught through a variety of games and activities that
explore basic music theory and movement. An introduction to instrumental music and
fun song writing activities are included as students learn to play and perform
on a variety of simple percussion and melodic instruments.
Recorder Class
Grades 2-4: Friday
Recorder class is designed to offer students (that
have been enrolled in Arts4Kids Music Classes or that have taken music in
school) an extension of the skills they have already learned. Students
reinforce general note reading, pitch and rhythm through playing activities and
ensemble arrangements by learning to play an instrument. Learning recorder is
easy and fun for everyone since students see success almost immediately as they
share in an ensemble experience. Every student is provided with a recorder to
keep after the course ends. Replacement recorders will be charged a fee of
$12.00.
THEATER
Grades K-4: Monday, Wednesday, Friday
Grades K-1: Tuesday, Thursday
Grades 2-4: Tuesday, Thursday
Students are introduced
to acting and performance techniques in an ensemble setting. Class activities
include improvisation, mock auditions and theater games. All activities are
designed to help the students feel more comfortable on stage. Students are
exposed to a wide selection of theatrical material to increase their knowledge
of theater and expose them to a variety of acting techniques, writing and
performance styles. They learn how to dramatize other pieces of literature;
enabling them to create a play from just about anything!
Vocal Ensemble
Grades 2-4: Tuesday
Vocal Ensemble is an extension of the Arts4Kids
Music class and traditional school music classes. All students are welcome to
join regardless of previous musical experience. Vocal Ensemble members focus on
developing their singing technique, vocal diction, ensemble participation, note
matching and ear training. Seasonal themes, popular selections and traditional
favorites are included as part of a balanced curriculum designed to teach
proper ensemble practice and provide a fun experience.
